In a world in which global power dynamics are profoundly shifting, colonial wounds inflicted by systemic inequality are ripped wide open. They highlight that history is not something of the past but continues to shape our lives today.

This exhibition invites you to face the lingering impact of colonialism in present-day Indonesia. Six contemporary artists highlight the complex realities of living with the past in the present and how colonial traces continue to manifest. Elia Nurvista investigates the persistence of issues of colonial extraction. Eldwin Pradipta and Dita Gambiro highlight how systemic social and racial inequality have shaped urban planning and continue to influence lived experiences. Maharani Mancanagara addresses the politics of historical representation.

By highlighting how colonial structures and practices continue to shape our present, the artists dismantle colonial practices and structures. This enables us to imagine a future free from their grip and paves a way towards healing and renewal. Budi Agung Kuswara reimagines gendered and racialized imagery while Arahmaiani opens up new paths based on local values, knowledge and ways of being moving beyond colonial legacies towards a more equal future.
