Alfiah Rahdini

Beautiful Cottage

Based in Yogyakarta, originally from Bandung, Alfiah Rahdini (b. 1990) is an artist who expresses herself through sculpture, performance, participatory art, installation, and site-specific works.

“Sailor Moonah #2,” a Sundanese language adaptation of Sailor Moon, a Japanese anime character popular in the 1990s - is a colorful statue of a young hijabi cosplayer. Connecting global pop culture to Indonesian identity issues, Alfiah's work brilliantly highlights the cultural and social pressures on women, who are increasingly controlled by conservative religious rules, especially about their appearance. In contrast, Indonesian men do not face these restrictions.

An earlier version, Sailor Moonah #1, was displayed in public spaces to get people to notice and respond. Watch the video to see how audiences reacted.
