Arahmaniani
Arahmaiani Feisal (b. 1961) is a multi-talented, long-standing and influential pioneer in Indonesian contemporary art. One of the best-known Indonesian women artists in the world since the 1990s, Arahmaiani’s interdisciplinary art addresses broad issues of humanity that involve cross-cultural communication with communities relating to diversity and inclusion.
“I Love You (after Joseph Beuys Social Sculpture)” written in Arabic letters was created to promote peaceful values of Islam to counter the negative public image of Islam in minority Muslim societies especially after the 9/11 attacks in New York. The work encourages an open-minded attitude instead of rigid religious interpretations and ultimately advocates for social change to a better situation, a more human, and more just world.
The Flag Project emerged from the aftermath of a 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta. For each project Arahmaiani brings together diverse communities with the purpose of self-inquiry and dialogue on impermanence, love, and belonging. Conversations start with choosing phrases that reflect local or global social issues, fostering unity and social healing. The words embodying community values are then made into colorful flags. Participants then parade the flags in a performance, symbolizing harmony. The Flag Project has expanded globally, promoting conversations among communities of different beliefs across Asia, Australia, and Europe. The flags on display here are made as part of the Children’s Biennale at National Gallery Singapore in 2023.
